I received a PM today asking me if I knew anything about an official release of the Santa Monica 1972 concert onto DVD, as they had heard one was coming up. I cannot find any official information -- just plenty on the bootleg releases (from Brazil, etc.) Because one of my productions (currently on the tracker) is a mastering of this show, I am curious to know myself. Anyone have any word?

Zilch on Winwood's site: http://www.stevewinwood.com/frame.php?URL=news.body.php

Was this originally a made-for-tv show? IT would be awesome to see it in HD but that would presuppose a 16mm or better master copy. Regardless, I will buy. This is my favorite on the Cohesion tracker.

Bootleg? I have an original VHS copy of this show I bought at a video store a few years back. I'd love it if they did upgrade it, though.

Abstract Logix has it listed in stock:

http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/prod ... ctid=23899

(and there are other European web sites which have it listed as a Region 2 disc, apparently on the Cherry Red video label ... unless this is somehow their 'boot' version? Amazon UK lists its release date as Sept. 8th, 2008)

it was produced by Taylor Hackford, iirc for a California (public??) television station.

Given that I can find zero information on "Cherry Red," and no information at all on Winwood's official site, I remain unconvinced it is an official release.

Remember when we had a similar discussion about The Who's Toronto 1982 show being released on the "Immortal" label? Deja vu.

Cherry Red is a legit label, so that is not really an issue here.

When I say "legit" I mean that they have released officially-sanctioned videos and films of many different artists.

Some of their DVD releases are Region 0 and others have been region-specific.

They are not the type of outfit that would put out something like the EC 1975 stuff ('MasterPlan' or whoever the heck that was).

Here's the Traffic one:

But, this release may be a Region 2 only thing :?:

or the USA version is coming out on September 30th (some websites list as such) ?

anyway it seems to be a 'legitimate' release, to me.

I was thinking this was similar to the long delayed, but finally released Blind Faith DVD on the Sanctuary label.

A superb transfer has already been done, from Laserdisc I believe? Seek and thou shall find.

I am still curious to hear if anyone has picked this up and done a comparison. I saw this DVD for sale at a record store, but it is the kind of store that also mixes in a bit of boots in their stock and this DVD's package still has me unconvinced it is official. I suppose I could've dropped the $20 to find out myself, but thought I would ask one more time.

It's released on the Cherry Red label, which is 100 % legal.

I have it and it certainly looks legit. But I didn't DL the PP version so I can't compare.

Mine is on the way and I should have it by Thursday at the latest.

I'm watching the PP version I downloaded and have finally realized why I like it so much, you actually get to watch superb musicians play, no jarring quick edits and cut-aways, just beautiful lingering shots of musicians doing their thing, the flute playing on Freedom Rider, Jim Capaldi being so ridiculously cool on LUOLMA, the sensous sax, Rebop laying it down on percussion. 8) 8) 8)

Modern edit gives me a headache :?

This is in no way shape or form an improvement over the PP edition. In fact I suspect it is from exactly the same source.
